There’s a pretty fun holiday coming up September 19th: it’s Meow Like A Pirate Day! (Yes, really.) This is actually a twist on Talk Like A Pirate Day, which is really only slightly less silly. Here, a local Plano, TX vet discusses whether or not the pirate’s life is right for Fluffy.
Cats Who Like Water
Most kitties are not particularly fond of water, and really hate to get wet. However, there are some exceptions. The Bengal is known for liking to splash around in their water bowls, while the adorable Turkish Van loves to swim!
Kits Ahoy
As you probably know, parrots are most often associated with being pirates’ number one pets. However, it does make sense that kitties would have had some fans among buccaneers. After all, Fluffy’s mousing ability would have been in high demand on the high seas, where vermin could threaten food stores.
Yo Ho Ho And A Bottle Of … Catnip
Fluffy is at the center of quite a few superstitions. You probably know that black cats have historically been considered bad luck. However, this wasn’t always the case. Pirates actually considered black kitties to be lucky. In fact, they felt that as long as their furry pals were well-fed and healthy, the ship would be safe. Fishermen’s wives sometimes kept black felines, hoping that their kitties would keep their husbands safe at sea.
Myth Or Fiction?
Another reason kitties were welcomed on ships? Cats actually can detect changes in atmospheric pressure. This is one reason they always land on their feet. Fluffy often gets uneasy when pressure drops, which often happens before a storm. While this is by no means an exact science, it is possible that cats gave off hints of impending weather events.
Shiver Me Timpurrs
Do you have a furry little pirate on your hands? Offer your pet something special. A can of tuna will be just fine for your feline landlubber. Fluffy can also enjoy plain, cooked fish, crabmeat, or shrimp meat. If you want to go all-out, build your cat a pirate ship out of boxes. You can also order a pirate costume for Fluffy. Just don’t force her to wear it too long: if she’s uncomfortable, snap a picture and then take it off.
