The 4th is just around the corner! Here in Texas, barbeques are pretty much mandatory for the summer holiday… not that we need much of an excuse to cook out. Fido loves a good grill out as much as we do, and would be more than happy to accompany you. Here, a Frisco, TX vet discusses keeping Fido safe at cookouts.
Food
It’s fine to offer your canine pal a special treat. Just stick to safe foods, like plain burgers, sausages, and hot dogs, or a piece of boneless chicken. Don’t give Fido anything seasoned with garlic, onions, scallions, or chives. Other dangerous foods include grapes, currants, and raisins; pitted fruits; mushrooms; macadamia nuts; chocolate; caffeine; alcohol; meat on the bone; avocado; raw meat, dough, or yeast; and anything that contains xylitol.
Trash
Man’s Best Friend is very enthusiastic about eating, and he isn’t very choosy about where he gets his snacks. Use a trashcan with a secure lid, just in case Fido gets any bright ideas about scoring himself some leftovers. The garbage could contain things like bones, toothpicks, skewers, tin foil, can lids, and other hazards.
Heat
Texas summers can be brutally hot. Make sure your canine buddy always has shade and water. Keep an eye on Fido, and look for signs that he’s uncomfortably hot. Panting is usually the first one you’ll notice. If you see any indications that your pup is getting hot, immediately give him water and take him to a cool area. If symptoms persist, call your vet.
Other Hazards
Keep Fido away from the grill or fire pit. He could run into the barbeque, or burn his mouth on a sizzling rib that fell to the ground. You’ll also want to keep chemicals, such as torch oil, bug spray, and citronella, away from your pet.
Fireworks
The 4th can be a dangerous holiday for pets, in large part because of the fireworks. Many dogs are terrified of the lights and noises, and will bolt out of fear. Keep Fido inside that night, and give him comfy bedding and a new toy. Turn a TV or radio on to mask the noise. Also, make sure your pet is microchipped and wearing ID tags, just in case.
