Texas is home to a wide range of wildlife. Unfortunately, not all of them are friendly. One particular critter that dog owners should always be aware of is the rattlesnake. Here, a Plano, TX vet offers some tips on protecting Fido from rattlesnakes.
Precautions
When walking Fido, avoid anything that snakes may find appealing. Woodpiles, holes under sheds, logs, and trash piles are all danger zones.
No Snake Zone
Taking a few simple measures to make your property a no-go zone for snakes can help protect you and your pup. Fences make great boundaries. Building a four-foot wall around your home will help. (Note: don’t use chain link, as snakes can often fit through the gaps.) Use humane pest control to keep your place free from mice, rats, and other things snakes eat.
Meeting Snakes
It can be pretty nerve-wracking to come across a snake. Fortunately, most snakes are quite shy, and will only bite if they feel threatened. Stop in place, and then slowly back away.
Training
Man’s Best Friend is very active and curious. Fido may very well want to attack the snake, or even try to play with it. Make sure your canine buddy obeys simple commands, like Sit, Stay, and Come.
Night Walks
Always bring a flashlight with you when walking Fido at night. Or, get a leash with one built into the handle. Keep a close eye on the ground, and pay attention to where both you and your furry pal step.
Ear Buds
Listening to music while walking your dog can be nice. However, it’s important to hear what’s going on around you. That telltale rattle is often the first clue when there’s a snake in your vicinity. Keep the volume low!
Vaccinations
There are rattlesnake vaccines available. These won’t offer your pup protection against every snake, and he will need regular boosters. However, if you’re in an area with a lot of snakes, and/or if Fido is feisty enough to try to tangle with one, it may be worth your while. Ask your vet for more information.
What To Do
If you know or suspect that Fido has been bitten, take him to the vet immediately. Dogs can and do survive snake bites, but your pet will need emergency care.
