Does your feline buddy have a scratching post? If not, you may want to get her one. Cats really do need a way to sharpen their nails. And, as some of you have likely discovered, if Fluffy doesn’t have a suitable nail-care station, she’ll just make her own. We can help! A local Frisco, TX vet offers some advice on choosing scratching posts in this article.
Height
Height is one of the most important things to consider. Cats like to stretch their muscles out when they are doing their nails. Fluffy’s scratching post should be tall enough to allow her to do this. If you have a kitten, make sure that the post is tall enough for your furry buddy to still be able to use it when she is fully grown.
Sturdiness
Another thing that is very important is choosing a scratching post that is sturdy. Your feline pal may get frightened of a post that wobbles. And, if it were to topple over onto her, there’s a pretty good chance that she’d become too wary of it to use it again.
Type
There are also different styles of scratching posts you can get. Cat towers are really the gold standard here, as they provide Fluffy with napping spots and lookout points, as well as nail-care stations. You can also get a simple post. Corrugated cardboard scratching beds will work too, though they won’t last quite as long.
Size
Keep Fluffy’s age and activity level (or lack thereof) in mind when you go shopping. A kitten will likely enjoy a piece that incorporates fun toys, while an older furball may ignore those extras.
DIY
If you’re a handy type, you can make your furry pal’s furniture. For instance, you can make a cat tower out of an old stepladder by adding planks to the steps, and then wrapping it in sisal rope or carpet. This also works with PVC pipe, or, if you’re feeling brave, real wood. Or, you can just attach a carpet tile to a smooth board, and then hang it on the wall. Voila!
Tips
When you get the post, be sure to encourage your feline friend to use it. Sprinkle catnip on and around it, and give Fluffy toys, treats, and attention for using it.
