Common Dog Care Mistakes

September is Responsible Dog Ownership Month. Our canine pals are wonderful pets, but they really do need lots of love and daily care. And, while we’ve been friends with Fido for thousands of years, it can be easy to overlook some of his needs. A Frisco, TX vet lists some common dog care mistakes in this article.

Lack Of Training

All dogs should obey simple obedience commands, such as Sit, Stay, Heel, Come, and Lay Down. This is important for petiquette, of course, but it’s also crucial for safety reasons. IF Fido hasn’t finished his education yet, take him back to school.

Fido is very curious and active, and has a pretty strong sense of adventure. Many pups are also quite opportunistic, and won’t hesitate to dash out an open gate or run off trailing a leash behind them. Training is of course very important here, but ID is also crucial. Make sure your pooch is microchipped and wearing proper ID tags.

No Dental Care

Did you know that as many as 80 percent of dogs over aged three have dental problems? These issues can be very painful for Fido, and can cause or contribute to many other health issues. Your furry friend can’t brush his own choppers, so it’s up to you to keep up with his dental care needs. Ask your vet for advice.

Not Enough Exercise/Stimulation

Just like people, dogs need proper activity to stay healthy. Even if your pet has a yard to run around in, he’ll still benefit from the exercise and stimulation that daily walks offer. Entertainment is also important. Offer Fido lots of toys, and take time to play with him every day.

Poor Diet

We know, we know: Fido will eat pretty much anything you drop on the floor. However, don’t let your theatrical pet convince you to hand over treats whenever he looks cute. Many of our favorite foods are neither safe nor suitable for our canine friends. Choose healthy snacks, and don’t overdo it.

Skipping Veterinary Care

Fido will be healthier and more comfortable with proper care. We recommend that pups be microchipped, spayed or neutered, and kept current on vaccines and parasite control. If your furry pal is overdue, make him an appointment today!
