Our Veterinarians

Dr. Shelley Michalk
Owner, Veterinarian
Dr. Shelley Michalk has always loved animals, nature, and the outdoors; she’s also a scientist at heart. For her, veterinary medicine was the perfect way for her to satisfy her scientific cravings while spending time around the earth’s creatures on a daily basis—she simply can’t imagine doing anything else! Dr. Michalk is the proud owner and lead veterinarian here at Coit Hedgcoxe Animal Hospital.

Dr. Michalk is originally from San Marcos, Texas, and she attended Texas Tech University to earn her undergraduate degree before gaining early acceptance to Texas A&M University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. After graduating as a licensed veterinarian, Dr. Michalk returned home to San Marcos and began working at the very same veterinary clinic that took care of her own family pets while she was growing up.

In August of 2003, Dr. Michalk and her family made the move to Dallas and she signed on as an Associate Veterinarian with Coit Hedgcoxe Animal Hospital. She’s been a member of the practice family ever since! Dr. Michalk loves the relationships she’s formed over the years with her patients and clients; she’s known many pets under her care since they were only tiny puppies and kittens.

Away from the office, Dr. Michalk can be found working in her yard, relaxing at the beach, running—she still holds an unbeaten track-and-field record at Texas Tech University!—and spending time with her own pets at home. She has a Blue Heeler, Gypsy, who comes to work with Dr. Michalk every day, as well as several of Gypsy’s puppies and multiple rescued cats.
Dr. Ákos Hartai
Dr. Ákos Hartai grew up in Hungary, where he adored spending time in the outdoors, learning about nature, and collecting any creature he could manage to lay his hands on. For as long as he can remember, he’s wanted to better the lives of animals by working as a veterinary professional! Dr. Hartai never gave up on his dream—now, he’s a licensed veterinarian with the Coit Hedgcoxe Animal Hospital team.

Dr. Hartai’s animal-care journey began in his teenage years, when he started volunteering at local pet clinics and working in dog kennels. It wasn’t long before he was performing technician work and assisting veterinarians. Dr. Hartai then attended The University of Texas at Dallas and Texas A&M University for his undergraduate education before earning his DVM degree from St. George University’s School of Veterinary Medicine, complete with a final clinical year at Oklahoma State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. He has attended post-graduate training at the Chi Institute to study veterinary acupuncture, herbal medicine, food therapy, and body work, and has also completed Parker College of Chiropractic’s animal chiropractic course. In addition, Dr. Hartai has earned his certification from the Canine Rehabilitation Institute’s canine rehabilitation program.

Medically, Dr. Hartai is particularly fond of working with senior-aged dogs and giving them enhanced mobility, comfort, and quality of life. He also enjoys keeping sporting dogs in tip-top shape. Most of all, Dr. Hartai enjoys interacting with his clientele on a daily basis and imparting his knowledge to the area’s loving pet owners.

Outside of his interests in the veterinary world, Dr. Hartai is an avid scuba diver and snorkeler, and also loves photography. Sometimes, he likes to combine these passions and take breathtaking underwater photos! Dr. Hartai lives with his wife, their two young sons, and a pair of loveable dogs: Lily is a Vizsla who came all the way from Hungary after Dr. Hartai graduated from veterinary school, and Sky the Golden retriever is a rescue who insists on someone constantly touching her.
