7 Things to Teach Your Puppy This Year

Happy New Year! Has a new puppy recently joined your household? If, so, you’ve got a lot of pet parenting to do over the next 12 months. That first year is a crucial time in your canine buddy’s life! Here, a Plano, TX veterinarian lists some key things you’ll want to teach little Fido this year.

Basic Commands

All dogs should obey simple orders, like Sit and Stay. This isn’t just about petiquette: it’s also very important for safety reasons. The five most crucial commands are Sit, Stay, Heel, Come, and Lay Down. Teach your furry buddy one at a time.

Some Fun Tricks

Once your canine pal has the basics down, have some fun with him! Many dogs really like learning new things! Teach little Fido a few cute tricks, like Shake Paw or Roll Over.

Beauty Procedures

It’s also very important for your furry friend to get used to being bathed and groomed, and having his paws and claws handled. Your future self will thank you for putting time into this now!

Housebreaking

This is a big one! However, while the housebreaking stage can get messy, it really shouldn’t last too long. Be consistent, and take your pooch out several times a day. Always and immediately reward him for doing his business outside.

Crate Training

Even if you don’t plan to crate your dog all the time, crate training is still important. For one thing, it’s much safer for your furry pal to travel crated. He may also need to be crated when visiting his vet or groomer.

Dental Care

It will be much easier for you to get little Fido used to having his teeth brushed now than to try and get him to accept a toothbrush as an adult. Start by gently rubbing your pup’s teeth and gums, and offer lots of treats and praise. Then, start using a doggy toothbrush and pet toothpaste.

Life Is Good

In order for little Fido to grow into a friendly, well-behaved adult, he’ll need proper socialization. The coronavirus pandemic can make this tricky, but there are still things you can do. Dress in different outfits, and take him to different parks and trails.
