Does your dog love to play Fetch? Perhaps your canine pal prefers Tug O War. Making sure your furry buddy has lots of fun toys is very important! However, as you’ve probably noticed, doggy toys can get dirty pretty quickly. After all, Fido does most of his playing with his mouth! Read on for some tips from a local Frisco, TX vet on keeping your pup’s toys clean.
Rope Toys
To clean your furry pal’s rope toys, start by removing any metal pieces. Then, soak it in water, and put it in the microwave on high for about a minute. Be sure to let it cool and dry before you give it back to Fido!
Plastic/Rubber Toys
Most plastic and rubber toys can go right into the dishwasher. Use an old toothbrush to remove any crud first. Then, run it through the hot cycle. You won’t need soap: the steam and hot water will do the trick. If you don’t have a dishwasher, just hand wash them.
Stuffed Animals
Before you decide to wash Fido’s favorite stuffed bear, take a good look at it first. If it’s torn, worn thin, or badly stained, you may just want to discreetly toss it and replace it. (Note: we also recommend removing small or sharp parts, like buttons or plastic eyes, and sewing up any holes.) If it looks you’re your pooch can get a little more mileage out of his plaything, then you can put it in the washing machine. Use hot water and unscented detergent, and then tumble dry on low.
Tennis Balls
Tennis balls are machine washable. Just use a short, cold-water cycle. Hang dry. Just be sure to replace it when it gets ripped.
Other
Other doggy items, such as rawhide chews, can be rinsed, sealed into a plastic bag, and frozen for a day or two. This won’t remove dirt, but it will at least kill bacteria.
Tips
This may go without saying, but you’ll probably want to clean your furry buddy’s toys while he is sleeping or out in the yard. Also, be sure to only choose toys that are the correct size for your pet’s breed. Our furry pals can hurt themselves on toys made for bigger or smaller dogs!
