8 Ways to Beat Litterbox Smells

Cats are very clean pets, which is one reason they are such beloved animal companions. However, although the fact that Fluffy will use a litterbox to do her business does make it easy to care for her, the litterbox itself isn’t exactly attractive. Litterbox odors can also be an issue. In this article, a local Plano, TX vet lists some great ways to beat litterbox smells.

Cleaning

The biggest thing you can do to fight stinky litterbox smells is to simply keep Fluffy’s powder room clean. We recommend scooping daily and changing the litter out completely every week.

Product Choice

There are many different brands of litter, and they are all different. Feel free to experiment a bit, and see which ones you like best. Let Fluffy have her say, too: some cats have specific preferences for litter types. (Note: if your feline pal is a kitten, avoid clay and clumping litters for now.)

Prevent Overcrowding

Do you have more than one kitty? If so, you’ll need more than one litterbox. Generally, you should have one box per furball, plus at least one extra.

Ventilation

Make sure Fluffy’s powder room is in a spot with good ventilation. If you have it in a bathroom, keep the fan running in that room.

Plants

Plants not only make your home look nice, they also keep it smelling fresh. Set out some pet-safe plants near Fluffy’s litterbox. Boston ferns, spider plants, and lemongrass are all good choices. You can find more safe options online at the ASPCA site.

Air Fresheners

Air fresheners are also very helpful. You just need to choose the right kinds. Opt for ones that break down scent molecules, instead of just masking them with perfumes. You may also want to consider putting a timed-release spray in the same room as the litterbox.

Products

Experiment with different products, such as tray liners and deodorizing powders. You may also want to give stackable or automated litterboxes a try.

Kitty Diet

While a litterbox may always be a little stinky, if your pet’s waste is extremely stinky, she may be having digestive issues. Low-quality food can also sometimes be a factor in litterbox odors. Ask your vet for specific nutritional advice.
