Leaving Your Cat Home Alone

Cats are very independent. Fluffy will do just fine if you need to leave her by herself while you go to work. However, kitties can and do get bored with nothing to do but stare at the walls. They also sometimes get a little lonely. Read on for some great tips from a Frisco, TX vet on making your pet’s alone time more fun for her.

Toys

Kitties are natural predators, and are instinctively driven to pounce on things. Offer Fluffy a variety of toys. Include some that she can play with alone, such as catnip mice and little balls. You’ll also want to have some toys that you can use to entertain your furball, such as laser pointers and wand toys.

Comforts

One way to keep your feline friend happy and purring is to set out lots of comfy beds for her to snooze in. These don’t have to be fancy. Fluffy definitely likes store-bought beds, but she’s also purrfectly content to curl up on a soft folded blanket or a pillow in a wicker basket.

Stimulation

Mental stimulation is very important to your cat’s health and well-being. Leave a TV or radio on for your kitty. This will provide her with background noise and keep her from feeling lonely. A cozy window seat with an interesting view—preferably one that includes birds and squirrels—will also keep your cute pet amused.

Kitty Garden

Set out some pet-safe plants for Fluffy to nibble on. This will help your tiny lion feel like she’s in a jungle! Check the ASPCA site here for options.

Catproofing

If there’s one thing cats excel at, aside from sleeping and looking cute, it’s getting into mischief. Remove or secure anything that could potentially endanger your frisky feline. This includes toxic plants, chemicals, medication, and small or sharp objects.

Comfort

Don’t leave Fluffy alone in a cold, dark house. Keep a light on if you’ll be out after dark. Also, leave your climate control on for your pet.

Long Trips

Kitties are generally fine by themselves for a day or two, as long as they have food, water, and clean litter. However, if you’ll be gone longer than that, consider boarding or hiring a petsitter. Better safe than sorry!
