Summer is just about upon us. This time of year is no joke here in the Lone Star State. Even pets that have grown up here can really struggle with it. Puppies are particularly vulnerable, as they are so fragile at this stage of their lives. Here, a Frisco, TX vet offers some tips on keeping your puppy cool in summer.
Keep Little Fido In The Shade
Encourage little Fido to relax in cool, shaded areas. You can also keep his bed or crate cooler by putting a fan near it to circulate the air.
Watch For Warning Signs
Puppies love to run and play, but they don’t have a lot of stamina, and can easily over-exhaust themselves. Keep a close eye on your furry friend, and look for signs that he’s getting too hot. You’ll probably notice panting first. If you see any signs of fatigue or dehydration, immediately give the little guy some water and then take him to a cool area. Call your vet if he doesn’t immediately bounce back.
Offer Cooling Options
Take a few extra measures to keep little Fido from overheating. You can put ice cubes in his water, or offer him a cold, damp towel to lie on. Pups with thick fur may appreciate a cooling vest. You can also soak a bandana with water and hang it around his neck.
Cold Chews
Little Fido may turn into an adorable chewing machine as he is teething. Give him frozen washcloths, or put some natural peanut butter in a kong toy and freeze it. You can also offer your puppy cold treats, such as pupsicles.
Swimming Lessons
A quick dip is a great way to cool off. Ask your vet if little Fido is ready to swim. If he is, take time to teach him. Have him wear a doggy lifejacket as he’s learning. Never leave your furry friend unattended near water, even for a moment. Your canine buddy may also enjoy a kiddie pool to splash around in.
Paw Care
Scorching temperatures can turn the average sidewalk into a sizzling hot burner. That’s definitely no fun to go barefoot (or barepawed) on. Get little Fido used to having his furry feet handled! Paw balm will soothe and protect those sensitive toe beans.
