June is Adopt A Shelter Cat Month! If you are thinking about adopting a kitty, this is a great time to do it. By adopting from a shelter, you are giving a sweet furball a second chance, which is a wonderful act of kindness. This is also a great way to find yourself the purrfect pet! Read on as a Frisco, TX vet offers tips on helping your feline friend settle in.
Being Prepared
You’ll need to do a little shopping to get ready for the big day. Fluffy will need bedding, toys, treats, food, and, of course, a litterbox and litter. Your new cat will also appreciate some kitty furniture, such as a cat tower. Put these things in a quiet area, like a back bedroom, at first, so your furry buddy has a quiet place to settle in.
Settling In
Some cats are very bold and fearless, and will immediately jump into your lap or stretch out on the couch. Other kitties are much more timid, and may need time to adjust to their new surroundings. Don’t be surprised if your cat sleeps a lot during the first few days. Being in a shelter is very stressful for our feline pals! Going to a new home is also a huge change. Fluffy may need time just to relax and recuperate.
Making Friends
Spend lots of time with Fluffy: offer her toys and treats, and play with her. Don’t force attention on your cat, however: let her decide when it’s cuddle time.
Roommates
If you have other pets, keep your four-legged pals separated at first. You’ll want to make introductions slowly and carefully, over the course of several days. Don’t let your furry friends interact freely until you get the all-clear from your vet. Ask your vet for advice on introducing Fluffy to her new roommates.
Veterinary Care
A trip to the vet’s is definitely in order. We recommend that all cats be microchipped and spayed or neutered, so if your cat hasn’t had these things done yet, you’ll want to schedule them ASAP. You’ll also want to make sure Fluffy is current on her vaccines and parasite control products. While you’re there, get some recommendations on her diet and care needs.
